Leslie F. Strack
Awarded Bronze Star

Technician Fifth Grade Leslie F. Strack, with the Second Infantry Division in Germany, was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action on December 24, 1944.  He is the husband of
Mrs. Annabelle L. Strack of South Monroe Street.  His citation reads as follows:

“Technician Fifth Grade Leslie F. Strack was working in truck bivouac near the intersection of highway N-28 and an unnumbered highway to Ovifat in Sourbrodt Belgium, when the area was attacked by low flying enemy aircraft strafing and at the same time was brought under long ranger hostile artillery.  Technician Strack took shelter in a nearby brick building.  Bullets from one of the strafing planes hit and set fire to boxes of ammunition which were loaded on a truck in the area.  Leaving the shelter while the attack continued he proceeded across an open field, a distance of approximately 75 yards, to the burning ammunition, assisting in efforts to put out the fire with an extinguisher.  When all the fluid had been used from the extinguisher he assisted in removing the still burning boxes of ammunition from the truck and extinguishing them on the ground.  In so doing Technician Strack, in disregard to his personal safety, conducted himself with gallantry and exemplified the best traditions of the service.”
